Preserving Assamese language, culture, and heritage — one family at a time.
The idea of OAKOKHO started in 2014 in Michigan, USA with a simple but powerful vision: to spread Assamese language, culture, and heritage around the world. What began as a small community effort has grown into a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving families across North America.
Every member of OAKOKHO works dedicatedly on developing and publishing educational materials and resources — including books, audio, video, and apps — helping children and adults learn about Assam, its language, history, people, and culture.
The purpose that drives every decision we make
To provide educational services and programs that teach Assamese language, culture, and heritage to children and adults. We are committed to promoting linguistic and cultural excellence, fostering lifelong learning, and advancing knowledge for the Assamese diaspora in North America.
A world where every person of Assamese heritage — wherever they live — can speak the language, celebrate the culture, and pass both on to the next generation with pride and confidence.
The principles that guide everything we do
We believe every child has the right to know where they come from — their language, their stories, their traditions.
Every program we offer is built around meaningful, structured learning that respects both the learner and the language.
We are stronger together. OAKOKHO is built on the generosity, time, and love of its members.
Our programs welcome everyone — regardless of background, proficiency, or location — who wants to connect with Assamese heritage.
We use technology — apps, videos, digital resources — to bring Assamese education to families wherever they are.
Culture is not a museum exhibit. We celebrate Bihu, music, dance, and art as living practices that evolve with each generation.
Programs and initiatives that bring our mission to life
Structured reading, writing, and speaking lessons for beginners through advanced learners of all ages.
